Roulette Strategy
Although many strategy guides will boast about their “unbeatable” system that guarantees that you will beat the house edge, Roulette like every other casino game, has a house edge that can be minimized, but not beaten. There are several interesting cases of people who have made a killing at Roulette tables, but only through meticulous recording and exploitation of faults in roulette wheels. In online casino Roulette, results are determined by a random number generator, and cannot be exploited.
That is not to say that by playing Roulette you are destined to lose. On the contrary, with responsible bankroll management and an understanding of Roulette strategy, you can build an impressive balance. It is important to be aware however that every spin of the wheel is independent of each other, so you cannot predict the result of the next spin based on previous spins.
Picking the right table
Foremost, you should always be playing European Roulette. American Roulette and European roulette are essentially the same game, just with an extra 0 in American Roulette, whose only purpose is to tilt the edge further in favor of the house. When in doubt, look for the table with only one 0.
The zeros are what gives the house its advantage. The payout for a single number bet is 35:1, while the true odds for that number is 1 in 37 in the case of European Roulette, and 1 in 38 (due the extra 00) in American Roulette. The bottom line: Don’t play at a table with more than one 0.
Systems of Betting
Although no system of betting works for Roulette, it is important that you are aware of two of the more common systems that are often passed off as a foolproof method to win.
Martingale System
The Martingale System is designed to allow you recoup your losses and slowly amass winnings by keeping your staple bet low. The system works as follows:
- Bet $1 (or any staple amount you choose) on a 50/50 bet that offers a 1:1 payout.
- If you win, bet $1 again.
- If you lose, bet $2, and continue to double you bet (4,8,16,32…) until you win.
The ultimate goal of this system is that eventually you will win again and not only recoup your losses, but also make a profit of $1. Continue with this system until you reach your target winnings.
While it may appear to be fool-proof, this system is flawed. Although you are unlikely to lose many times in a row, Murphy’s Law states that “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”, so you will eventually lose 10 times in a row and clear your bankroll. The only safeguard against this happening is having an infinite bankroll that you can keep doubling, but for most of us that is irrelevant. You also need to be aware of the table limits – many online roulette tables have limits that will only allow you to double-up so many times before you cannot bet any higher.
The Martingale System is only one of the many Roulette systems guaranteed to win, although it is the most popular. Many people may claim to have created a system that guarantees a consistent profit, but in reality no such system exists and you need to be aware of that.
Reverse Martingale System
This is a system that more people find success with, and it presents less risk to your bankroll. The system works as follows:
- Bet $1 (or any staple amount you choose) on a 50/50 bet that offers a 1:1 payout.
- If you lose, bet $1 again
- If you win, bet twice your winnings ($2 in this case).
The choice is up to you how many times you would like to continue doubling your bet after a win, but is not recommended to double up more than once or twice – eventually you will lose a bet and lose your winnings if you keep going. Once you have doubled up the set amount (and hopefully won), return to betting $1.
The bigger bets are always made with your winnings and not your bankroll (you will always be betting $1 out of your bankroll, no matter what), so you are only risking your “unclaimed” winnings when doubling your bet. The key is not to get greedy and double up too much, or you may not be able to ever collect any of your winnings and empty your bankroll quickly.
This system is far superior to the Martingale system and recommended to use if you prefer to play with a system. While it is recommended compared to the Martingale system, it is still not recommended to play with a betting system. Ultimately the house edge will rear its ugly head in and beat any known system though, so don’t use this exclusively and expect to make consistent profits.
