Roulette Description

Roulette, derived from the French word “little wheel”, is one of the most popular classic casino games.  Most players prefer the European version of the game as opposed to American Roulette, as it gives the player a slightly favorable edge.

Rules of Roulette

Roulette is played against the house – players make bets on which pocket they think the ball will land in.  Each number has the color red or black assigned to it, and bets made on the number or the color will give a payout – all other bets are lost, and a new round commences.  There are two different variations of Roulette that you should be aware of:

  • European Roulette – In European Roulette the wheel consists of number 1-36 colored red and black, and a green pocket numbered 0.
  • American Roulette – Similar to European Roulette, the wheel consists of 1-36 colored red and black, a green pocket numbered 0, and an additional green pocket numbered 00.

The addition of another zero in American Roulette close to doubles the house edge when compared to European Roulette.  European Roulette has a house edge of 2.70%; American Roulette has a house edge of 5.26%.  Always choose a European Roulette table over an American one.

In a land-based casino, bets are made during the “shuffle” – the time allotted to players to place their bets.  Experienced Roulette players have a system of bets they make, but even they are not always able to put their system into play before the shuffle phase ends, and the wheel is spun.  Thankfully, in Online Roulette you are able to take as much time you need to place your bets and experiment with different strategies without feeling under pressure.

Bets in Roulette

Roulette Inside Bets ExampleRoulette’s betting options are fairly straightforward – we will explain each bet available to the player. These bets are divided into two categories: inside and outside bets.

Inside Bets

The list below explains all the various Inside Bets available to you.  Inside Bets are lucrative bets – although the chances of winning are much smaller than outside bets, the payouts can be fantastic.

  1. Straight/Classic Bet – A bet placed on any single number, such as on the number 5.  If the ball lands on the number, payout is 35:1
  2. Split Bet – A bet placed on the line between two numbers, such as between 16 and 19, or 16 and 17.  If it falls on either number, payout is 17:1
  3. Street/Row Bet – A bet is placed on the line of the first number of a row.  Placing a bet on the line between 10 and 1st dozen will payout if the number is 10, 11, or 12.  Payout is 11:1
  4. Six Line/Double Street Bet – Similar to the above, a six line bet is placed between two streets; in the example the bet will payoff for 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, or 30.  Payout is 5:1
  5. Corner/Square Bet – A bet is placed on the middle of four numbers (similar to a split bet, but with four numbers instead of two), such as between 19, 20, 23, 22.  Payout is 8:1
  6. Basket Bet – A bet is placed on the first five number; 0, 00, 1, 2, 3.  This bet is only available in American Roulette and is the single worst bet you can make, carrying a house edge of 7.9%.  Payout is 6:1

Roulette Outside Bets ExampleOutside Bets

Outside Bets are more conservative bets, and generally what you should stick to – they have smaller payouts than inside bets, but much higher odds.

  1. Dozen Bets - Similar to the bet name, these bets payout if the number falls in 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36, respectively.  Payout is 2:1
  2. Column Bets – Similar to the above, these bet on the column of numbers (first column is for 1, 4, 7, 10, etc.).  Payout is 2:1
  3. 1 to 18, 19 to 36 – Similar to the bet’s name, these payout if the number is 1 to 18 or 19 to 36.  Payout is 1:1
  4. Even, Odd – Pays out if the number is an even or odd number (0 or 00 is an automatic loss for this bet).  Payout is 1:1
  5. Red, Black – Pays out if the number is red or black.  Payout 1:1
